Question for UK parents and school: Do schoolchildren ever repeat a year in school

Question for UK parents and school: Do schoolchildren ever repeat a year in school?
I'm from America and it isn't unusual for children to repeat the year in school if they aren't meeting standards. I've heard that students never repeat a year. There are no "grades" but it's which year of school you're in. The year of school you're in depends on the child's age. Is that correct? What do you do with kids who are falling behind? Do you keep promoting them to the next year in school? How does that work over there?

Nope, there are some who really need too, but they don't. But we do get skipped.
2 :
we live in scotland and in my childs school it is common for children to repeat a year, 3 children are in my childs class who are primary 4 but are in his p3 class as they weren't ready to move on, it depends on the school, their funding as outside classroom assistants can assist children who are falling behind within the class, but obviously this must be done before it is too late and money. children are assessed on their work and performance, as well as sitting tests in p2
3 :
Children In the UK don't repeat school years. If a child is developing slowly, they may start school a year later but they are never held back to repeat a year. If children are falling behind, they will work at a slower pace than the rest of the class or they may repeat the course the next year. They may also move to a different class but they stay with children their own age. In highschool, children who fall behind may sit the course over three years instead of two for example and if the fail, they will resit the course the year after, if they choose to do so. Hope this helps :)

How difficult would it be to transfer from 11th grade in America to a boarding school in the UK

How difficult would it be to transfer from 11th grade in America to a boarding school in the UK?

Primary & Secondary Education - 3 Answers

1 :
not that hard =)
2 :
It depends which school you attended here, if it was a top school, you have good grades, it should not be that difficult. The Schools, especially private schools in Europe and the UK have a more advanced curriculum, especially in Literature, History, Science and Mathematics.
3 :
It varies, some boarding schools in the UK are very selective. Most, however, are less so. If you do so you should choose a school which runs an IB program which is more similar in character to the US system (and better than A levels anyway). Oh and it helps if you can write large cheques.

Learners from poor families who need to have a higher education will normally have to acquire a loan from financial institutions in order to get an education. The government, through the local banks will advance such credit to students and have them pay them off once they have started earning. This may sound good but not until the former student is unable to pay off such debts. http://www.worldbestloans.com/student-loans.htm This is due to the high interest that such loans end up attracting making, it impossible for such a person to pay off the debt. Sometimes the student may stay for long before he can get employment, meaning the amount to pay continues to escalate. In cases like these, the debtor needs to get student loan help in order to keep abreast with such debt.
2 :
The FAFSA can also be used in the U.K. at certain universities. A quick Google search will give you the correct link. Beyond that you are looking at taking out a personal loan from a qualified lender or applying for scholarships that you are eligible for.

What to wear back to private school thats in the uk

What to wear back to private school thats in the uk?
I'm going to my new private school in London England and I'm going to be a freshman. But I'm from the states and I have no idea what to wear back to school. I want to get noticed but in the right ways. I'm open for anything but it should be cool outside when i go back. I need outfit ideas please please please help. Im a 15 yearold girl and im going to one of the only private american school that doesnt wear uniforms. ACS.

Don't most schools in the UK wear uniforms?
2 :
A formal sailor's uniform always is appropriate at a private school.
3 :
im from england... aren't all the schools uniforms? and i dont know if your a guy or a girl? ....
4 :
You wear a uniform...
5 :
people she says she's going to one of the only private schools that doesn't wear uniforms, so stop telling her to wear a uniform! Just wear whatever clothing you would normally wear here! There's not that much of a difference. If you want to be noticed, where one "statement piece" with each outfit. For whole outfit ideas, check out places like polyvore. People use pictures and put together outfits. There are literally thousands of them. If you don't like the price of the stuff they used, just look around at cheaper stores like H&M and Forever 21 for an alternative. http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/search.sets?query=clothing for this link, i searched "clothing". On the left, theirs a whole list of tags ranging from colors to different adjectives. Just click the tag you want for the color or style you want. Start out really basic by not tagging anything and just take a look. Then if you find a color or style you know you want, just click on that word from the list. easy. Now. For the statement pieces, try i really noticable necklace or a bright bag, or sweet shoes. That'll make people notice you in a good way, as it'll catch there eye and spark they're interest. Once they notice the statement piece, they'll soon look at everything else you're wearing. How you said it should be cold, try not to cover youself up in one puffy jacket. Instead, wear layers. That way, you don't have to wear a huge jacket, which would cover up what you're wearing. tanktops underneith shirts, loose shirt over tight shirt, stuff like that. Once it gets colder, find a cool stylish jacket. Just as a tip, if you're looking for clothing under the category of "basics" like cami's and plain tshirts, there's no point in getting them at a more expensive store. Look to forever 21, as you can get camis for 3 bucks and t shirts for 5. that way, you'll have more money for clothing that, well, isn't the basics, like a stylish top. stores to look at: www.charlotterusse.com www.forever21.com www.wetseal.com If you don't want to shop at all, still use polyvore, and compare items they used to stuff you already have. then just put your stuff together to match the picture.

What would I have to do if I decide to spend a year at a private school in Scotland (UK)

What would I have to do if I decide to spend a year at a private school in Scotland (UK)?
My dad and stepmother are moving to Scotland for business and I'm looking to spend a year or a semester there for school. I am a Sophomore at the moment and I want to spend Junior year over there. All my core classes are "honours" classes and I have a grade point average of about 3.7 or so. What kinda of classes would I take if I do attend a private school in Scotland? DO they have a form of SAT or ACT? Would going to a UK school be better than an American one? Basically, how will this all go down?

you wouldn't have to go to a private school ... if your parents are legitimately in the UK, on a work permit or something, you could attend a regular state school for free ... our state schools are very good and the Scottish education system is particularly so however if you want to follow American style education there are 3 schools in Scotland offering this ... the International School in Aberdeen, St Leonards School in St Andrews and Fettes College in Edinburgh

Right :) If you are going to be doing your Junior year here, you will probably be put in 5th year. In this year students may take highers or Intermediate exams, but from the info you gave, you would probably take all higher classes as I am. From my research I would say yes, scottish school is better than american. If you were to stay over here and do a degree at university, you will have tuition fee's paid by the government and you will get a worldwide recognized qualification, where as in America, your degree is only applicable in America. As for going to a private school, I would;t bother. Many scottish public schools are just as good, some are even better. There are many subjects you can take, with the normal subjects such as English, Maths and the Sciences, a wide array of languages (french/german spanish/ to cantonese/Urdu/Gaelic) and history, geography etc. It all depends on where you go to school. If you find out where in Scotland you are moving to I can provide you with more info :) I live on the East coast of Scotland.

You have any other back ground info on this? Newspapers? Web site addresses? I would like to know more myself.
3 :
Yes im Scottish too and this is news to me, this is the Tory,s for you , next they,ll be teaching the kids how to salute Santa Claus. Vote S.N.P and get out of this sinking ship !!!
4 :
It basically was a way to talk to the kids about what to do in an emergency without freaking them and their parents out about terrorists. this way its just a creative writing idea, instead of about how brown people are coming to kill them.
5 :
I haven't heard about it, but if I had to guess, it would be for the same reasons USA had their kids hid under their wooden desks for fear of Sputnik. In other words, paranoia and delusional xenophobia. Then again, they might have just meant "UFO" as in "any flying object a terrorist or someone else might use to kill us," or something like that.
6 :
Sure why not ,well known fact really, tornado's hit trailer parks UFOs hit schools I thought every body knew this.
7 :
Because our school system is controlled by lunatics who make you put a condom on a banana in science class. is it any wonder teen pregnancy is so high when the kids can't tell the difference between a banana and a penis.
8 :
Hmm...quite intriguing indeed. It's the first I've heard of this news but now that I've "googled" it it seems to be on a few websites. That coupled with the news (though unsubstantiated) that the UN was about to appoint an Earth alien ambassador does certainly give you food for thought! Perhaps we are finally approaching the day where world governments give us full disclosure and tell us what the hell's going on with UFOs. It's either that some people at the top are playing a sick joke on us with the whole 2012 date looming on the horizon, or, something big is happening and they are drip feeding us the information and mentally preparing us for CONTACT.

Hi Kyle, If you are looking to work in the US as a doctor, preferably in California there are two pieces of advice I can give. One piece of advice is if you are considering studying in the US for your bachelors degree then you would need to either do your IB or do five A-Levels (most likely a physical science, a social science, English, maths, and a humanities such as philosophy) then take your ACT / SAT about six months before you plan on applying to a US university, and also some schools will require that you take TOEFL. Grades you will need on your A-Levels will need to be at least B grades. Provided you will are accepted, able to get a student visa, and provided you are able to get funding to attending school in the US you next step would be to maintain at least a 3.6 GPA while obtaining your bachelors degree and completing your pre-med courses. Then in your senior year at university you will need to take the MCAT test as preparation for applying to medical school in the US. An alternative route would be to be accepted into medical school in the UK and then contact the Medical Board of California about transferring to the US to work after completing your medical education in the UK. Most likely you will have to take some courses and undergo further training.

I believe that most of the college level schools are interchangeable between the US and the UK and that education at one will count completely at the other. I'm unsure about actual med school though and think that US schooling may be necessary for US licensing in the end. I would recommend getting in touch with a few US medical schools (you should be able to google them) and asking what their pre-med requirements are. Specify that you are currently a teen in the UK. They will be only too glad to assist you. If you find that you need to do your pre-med studies in the US, they will be able to assist you in getting information as to how to get a student visa and what step have to be taken for enrollment. Additionally, talking to your school counselor or colleges in your area would be a good idea. They would also be able to assist and give information. Good luck!

Where should I go to school in the UK

Where should I go to school in the UK?
I'm choosing between York, King's College London, University College London, and Birkbeck. York is the most affordable, obviously. Is KCL as reputable as UCL? I'm doing MA Eng Lit in York... the faculty is great here and the environment is best for studying, considering the fact that you will have no entertainment at all during the entire year. What's more, it's second in the country after Oxford!
3 :
University College or Kings. I studied English and Lingusistics at Westminster who have their buildings not far from the UCL buildings on Southampton Row. The British Library is at the end of the street which is a fantastic resource and you have all the other institutions nearby such as the National Gallery, British Museum etc. You will be suprised how much you use them! Also there are all the theatres in London, including Shakespears globe on the South Bank. UCL also has a great Student Union, with a pool in the basement, which is one of the better pools in central London actually, and very good student facilities. I know London can be expensive but for a year its worth it. You can easily find a cheaper place to live if you move further out to zone 3 or 4 and also easily find a job. Good luck!

Hello, try the National Association of Youth Theatres website (link below) and search for a youth theatre in your area, or further afield. This way you can see who is offering summer schools, which of them musical based, when, where and how to get involved and so on. Although not a summer school, you might also be interested in the National Youth Music Theatre, who run May and Summer workshops in London. Also try the National Youth Theatre who run 12 day courses, usually in August that finish in a production. Not sure what they are doing this year, but if you are lucky it will be a musical!

Im the same age as you and go to school in the UK, I think that if you have an accent, everyone will love you.. especially if its an american one :)

It depends where you are really. There are too many girls my age and older who try way to hard. It depends what you're into. If you're into a girl who plasters about 3 inches of make up on then you will definitely find a girl, if you're into more nice and natural you will probably find one :P But thats just lookswise. There are many nice people personality wise!
6 :
The UK girls are very mean and catty, they like to play games with guys and mess with emotions, especially around 15. Some are pretty some aren`t, they`re not prettier or uglier there, just average. Be careful with those girls.

depends how fit you are :) haha. i go to school in england. + most people get on just fineeee. as long as your not weird (: + uk schools are abittt crap. but im sure you'l be reet. where abouts you living?
3 :
Well the UK has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy so you should have no problem getting a girl.. apparently they are very easy.. but just treat them right and be nice :)
4 :
Hey, Im from the U.K. Well you still have the groups, you know the populars, the geeks etc. My friends are nice :) In the midlands though, they don't have the posh accent that most Americans would associate with England. Don't sweat it, your fifteen, half white/thai, you sound hot :) To be honest, it will be the same as American High School. You may not get girls 4 years older than you as there is something called Sixth Form with people that age in. Basically they are separate from the other students, as they have finished school and are going onto study for their A-Levels. Good Luck ~x~
5 :
To be honest it's probably going to be the same as anywhere else - high school is high school wherever you go! Having been to British and American schools I can honestly say I prefer the Brits. Of course like all schools you have your little groups but I found the American schools so hard. Everyone was SO segregated and I really disliked it. Now are British girls pretty? I find there are two extremes, naturally pretty and ridiculously fake OTT girls who probably are pretty but wear too much make up and false tan! Girls are girls and schools are schools... wherever you go!
6 :
Firstly it ain't high school. It's secondary school :). Also some girls can be nice and genuine, others can be bitches. They are generally not as shallow as american girls. As 'social groups' are less exaggerated and popularity ain't so easy to determine in some cases.

I'm from the West Midlands. English girls tend to be quite mature when it comes to dating - streetwise is probably the correct term. They aren't scared of anything and they are sexually forthright. As for pretty... of course there are pretty girls but I don't think English girls are so hung up on appearance as some other cultures, perhaps because they are more confident. You are about to have an education and have your eyes opened that's for sure! PS - let me know if I'm right!

Question about school uniform policies in the UK

Question about school uniform policies in the UK?
Hey guys, Seeing as we are going back to school next week I went out and bought some new jogging bottoms/trackees/tracksuit trousers for P.E lessons. They were the only pair which fit me well, and stayed under the policy of black trousers for P.E. My mum and I realised that they have a long word along the right leg, saying "Mckenzie" in relativley large silver letters, and we are wondering whether this will be allowed. I am unsure as to whether they will be, but they are the only decent pair we could find which fit me. I am also a little nervous about it as Mckenzie isn't really the type of brand I am used to wearing, and I am worried that someone will say something crude or embarrassing. Any views on this? Does anyone with possible knowledge of UK schools know whether they'd fit the guidelines? Thanks for your answers in advance xxx - I did have a booklet but I can't find it - we have to wear polo shirts with the school logo

It's different for every school. My school made me wear a P.E kit that was designed for the school. It's all down to the rules they have. Do you have a rule book or uniform regulation guidelines to look at? If so take a look at that and then see if you think they'd be ok. If not go to the head of P.E on your first day and ask if these trousers will be ok. Make sure you do it before the class otherwise you could get into trouble. If they say no then ask them precisely what they want and any stores they'd recommend you visit. It's best to be in the know. :) :)
2 :
It depends entirely on the school - at my school basic PE kit is black football shorts, school football socks, school PE polo top (has logo on), trainers and then optional school trackers (they've got the school logo on, pretty much everyone wears them), school PE sweatshirt and school fleece. I don't think anybody will say anything crude or embarrassing about mckenzie - i wear mckenzie trainers even though it's not really my brand.

I don't think so. Check with your school, but most likely you won't be able too.

I don't know for sure, but i do know that medical school programs start at the undergraduate level in the UK. Students come straight out of high school and start studying medicine in the UK, whereas (as i'm sure you know) you complete a bachelors degree in the US b4 attending medical school. As you already have a degree im not sure if you can be accepted into a medical program in the UK. You may be able to get a master's or PhD in a medical field (such as public health) but i think it would be difficult to get into a program that trains you as a medical doctor.

To study in the UK you need to show that you can pay the fees and also support yourself. if you take £10K as the annual fees for international students, then over 3 years that about £30K, plus you will need another £10K a year to support yourself. if you can demonstrate that you have the means to support yourself, then the other things you need to show are relevant qualifications. http://www.internationalstudentsguide.com

Applying for Canadian Government Student Loans for UK school

Applying for Canadian Government Student Loans for UK school?
I am having a hard time finding solid information as to how much I could expect to receive. I am also looking for information as to what the Canadian Government need from me while I am in the UK applying for the loan. I am still studying in Canada at this moment finishing a diploma course in accounting and business. I am still in the process of applying for my Perspective Student Visa. But I want to have everything in order for all the steps I need to take to be a student in the UK. I want to be able to apply for my Student Visa while I am in the UK. I would like to avoid the extra expense of having to fly back to Canada then return to the UK just because I forgot to “dot an i or cross a t”, if that is at all possible. I want to study in Wales. I am not sure if I will be accepted to a University or have to do some schooling at a college my first year or two in the UK. 1)Is the amount that the Canadian student loans site says is per week, 350CND I believe, also meant to cover a persons’ tuition? Or is that a completely separate amount? I have looked at my past Student Loans and it seems that there are a couple separate amounts. The living amount, grants and tuition. The school admissions advisor handles all of the paper work and deals with student loans, so I have to learn all of this now. a)Is this weekly amount for living expenses? b)What is the maximum amount for tuition and fees? c)Do they take into account that students are in another country with different economies? Or is it still calculated from where the student is from? 2)I have read that if you are an independent student away from home there is a higher amount you can receive. Is this true? 3)What is the document that a student needs to show the UK that they are eligible to receive funding from Canada student loans, before they actually receive the loan? I believe that I will need to show documentation that I can receive the loan and that the Canadian Government is my sponsor for schooling in the UK. If there are any other suggestions anyone would care to make, I would appreciate it. I am finding this whole process a bit daunting.

I have a newly diagnosed diabetic child. What do I need to tell the school

I have a newly diagnosed diabetic child. What do I need to tell the school?
He is 9 in a UK school. He was diagnosed on Tuesday and has been very ill in hospital. The diabetic nurse is keen to get back to normal, but he is very frightend about going back this week. What details do I need to give the school.

1 :
just notify the school and youll probably have to give an epi-pen to his teacher
2 :
I would think they need to know to watch for any symptoms of too high or low blood sugar and what medications he needs to take and when....
3 :
You tell them that your child has diabetes, what to do if he has a hypo and give them some Glucogel [stuff that will stop your child from a hypo] Hope this helps
4 :
Make sure they are aware of the signs of his sugar being too high or too low. Make sure they know to make sure he takes his shot(?) at lunch. And tell them to give him space and not smother him because of his condition. It only makes it worse to treat a diabetic child different from other children. Trust me!
5 :
Well, you should tell the school any pertinent information that the doctors have given you. What medication he is on, and when he should take it. If he needs a shot every day, we will most likely have to go to the school office to take it. So you will need to give them some of his medication so he can take it there. And any documentation that they might ask for. The school should be able to walk you through it. I'm sure they encounter this all the time. I'm sorry your little boy is sick, but just know that most of the people in my family have diabeties, and they all live normal, healthy lives. So there's nothing to fear. Hope that helps!
6 :
You should tell his teacher(s) that he is nervous about coming back and make sure the school helps him and is nice and comforting to him. You should also make sure they have his insulin and know how to give it to him and when if he needs to be getting it at school. And just make it clear to them that you need everything to go smoothly or else the consequence will not be very good.
7 :
Advise the school what all his nurse tells you. - Advise the school to NOT give him ANY table sugars or sweets (candies.) If the school has an on-staff Nurse, inform them of this so they (hopefully) can keep a closer eye on your son during his time on campus. WATCH HIS FEELING SLUGGISH / TIRED or HYPERACTIVE during the day.
8 :
Tell the teachers and the school nurse. Usually the teachers are informed on what to look for. Put all of his emergency information on a paper, meds, how much he takes, insurance info, phone numbers, and give a copy to the nurse, one to the teacher and one to the office. Make sure his teacher has some hard candy or glucose tablets she can give him in case his blood sugar drops. Make sure they know he needs a special diet.
9 :
well first off you need to go into the school and you need to tell the headmaster/school nurse and teachers that your son has been diagnosed diabetes - and tell them what type if its type 1 or type 2. tell them what medication he requires and when. i think thats it. its best not to ring up coz they might not be listening properly at leats if u go in you can get across everything they need to know.
10 :
My brother is 10 and he has diabetes since last summer. We also were afraid for him when school year started and my parents decided that they are going to tell about my brother's condition only to his teacher. She is only one that knows for now!!! My opinion is that his friends also have to now about it if anything happens ( like failing of his blood sugar) on his way to school or when he is coming back so they could react properly. P.S We live next to my brother's school so if anything happens some of us is there in a few minutes.
11 :
just be open and honest with them and tell them everything you know and what precautions if any that need to be taken and what needs to be done while he is in school. put it in writing also, so that they have it all written down as to what meds he needs(if any) at what times and what to do in an emergency
12 :
I'm so sorry to hear about your son. My 2 year old daughter was diagnosed a few months ago, so I understand a lot of what you're going through. I don't know anything about the UK, but I belong to an email list where other Moms were talking about this kind of thing in the US. As far as the schools are concerned, it's a disability and the kids are supposed to get something called a 504. Basically, it's instructions on how the school is supposed to handle situations, and the school should be required to either learn how to manage your son's diabetes or have a nurse on hand who can. The email list is here: http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/index_cwd.htm Go to the link on the left side titled "parents" and then you will find a link to the parents' email list. This is an excellent website, the link to it was given to me by my daughter's endocrinologist's office. Go there and ask ... there should be someone there who can tell you what to do.
13 :
I suggest making an appointment with his teacher and the school nurse (if there is one). Whether or not he is able to test himself and give himself insulin, he will probably need to be monitored and reminded (at least for a little while). Make a list of all the times he should be checked and make sure it is often, especially around recess time or any time he will be especially active as you still don't know how his BG will be affected by exercise. Make sure they know how to use his meter and how to draw insulin if they are going to be helping. You would be surprised at how many nurses don't really know how to do it or are nervous about it. Write down all of his carb ratios and correction amounts for highs. Also give them all of your emergency phone numbers and the number of his doctors. If you know of any of his 'high' or 'low' signs, write them down or just tell them what to look for - glazed look, low energy, hunger, or disorientation for lows; thirst, irrationality, and moodiness for highs. They will also need to know at what number to treat him at (usually 70 in the states, I am sure you can find the UK equivalent) and with what to treat him. Also have him bring a juice and other snacks to school with him everyday for lows. They also need to know how to use the glucagon in case he is unconscious. If possible, stay close by the first couple of days to be there if anything comes up, or at least have a phone they can call you for any questions. In fact, I would ask that the first week they call you each time they test him so you can know the number and find out how much insulin they would give him in that situation - just to make sure they are doing it right. In the states, we need to have an official form that includes all this info. I am sure you can download the form from the jdrf's website or children with diabetes. It is a lot of info, but once they understand the basics, you can rest a lot easier. Also, even though your nurse is keen on getting him back in school, I think it would be okay to admit that either you or your son is just not ready and set the date to return within the next week or so. There is so much to learn and take in, it does take time. Good luck to you.
14 :
You need to talk to the school nurse, so she can educate his teachers on symptoms of hypoglycemia. Explain the diagnosis and tell them the whole situation. Of course, you will have to give them your home phone number, your childs physicians phone number and tell them to call you immediately if they have any problems. Arrange for your child to have the snacks and meals he needs at school. He is a special needs child now and I am sure there are other diabetic children at the school. Continue to re assure your child he will be taken care of at school. Have a confrence with his teacher and him together so they can better understand the issue at hand. You will do fine. I really like the answer above me. Excellent.
15 :
Explain to the school what happened. Give them any papers regarding is symptoms and what they need to do if something should happen. Also if he is on any medication give them a schedule and dosage of what he needs.

Every UK school to get a "Holocaust specialist" - Why? - Why not a Holodomor specialist or Genocide Specialist

Every UK school to get a "Holocaust specialist" - Why? - Why not a Holodomor specialist or Genocide Specialist?
The Times November 7, 2008 "Every secondary school is to get a Holocaust specialist to ensure that the subject is taught comprehensively and sensitively." http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/education/article5106164.ece __________ Why is this one historical event to get such special treatment by the UK government? In whose interest is it, that British children, born in the 21st century, must have this one topic drummed into them by a "specialist"? .

According to Rabbi Edward Feinstein, "The Holocaust is the worst tragedy in all of human history." http://books.google.com/books?id=pnV6egtgsukC&pg=PA35&lpg=PA35#v=onepage&q&f=false More people were killed in the Holodomor (well, look at that; Yahoo's spell check doesn't even recognize that word!), so I can only conclude that the lives of non-Jews are worth less than the lives of Jews.
6 :
The only way to keep a flawed historical event considered truth is to teach it to people while they're young and gullible. I can only recall of 2 historic "facts" that rely on nobody being allowed to ask questions about them for them to remain facts. The holocaust and September 11.
7 :
Because the Holocaust of Muslims civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan was getting out of proportions and was part responsible for tony blair getting out. so the labor government wanted to divert the attention of gullible from the holocaust in Iraq and Afghanistan to the original holocaust since 1900. Also elections were merely a year away and labor wanted donations/money from Jews to help them during elections or fund their election campaign.
8 :
Terrifyingly I have to agree with KAPS. The reason this was put forward in 2008 was purely as a cynical device by the useless Labour Government that we had to gain votes amongst the Liberal left and pressure groups from the Jewish Community. After labour had refused to condemn aggression towards Jews by Muslims they risked losing the Jewish vote. Therefore you have to produce a sound bite that brings them back into the fold. As to the rest of his usual claims about the 6 million Holocaust every year then please feel free to read previous answers of mine or read his blog. It takes about 5 minutes to realise that not one of his newspaper articles says there was a massacre of 6 million but he will persist, believeing that everybody else is as intellectually challenged as he is. Ray.
9 :
I think all genocides in the human history should get their share too. Not fair to just focus on one.

Should UK-trained Osteopaths be Required to take at least Some High School Science Subjects

Should UK-trained Osteopaths be Required to take at least Some High School Science Subjects?
Real physicians on both sides of the Atlantic take rigorous courses in Chemistry, Physics, and Maths at the High School and University level before they even start their schooling in Medicine proper. This is necessary in order to even begin to understand the language of modern rigorous medical training. This is apparently not the case for UK-trained osteopaths. The entrance requirements for UK Schools of Osteopathy are shockingly low, and the full degree can be done part-time, on weekends. One notorious osteopath who visits this section regularly admits to leaving school at the age of 16, without any A levels, and without ever taking a course in High School Science. (He claims to have taken a make-up survey course called "Access to Medicine" in order to qualify for Osteopathy School). This would explain his adherence to some very strange ideas, such as the following gem: "I remember seeing a documentry about folk who'd inadvertently built machines which were more than 100% efficient. Physicist very skeptically went along to see them. Once shown that the energy output was greater than energy input the answer was always the same — "this isn't a laboritory" — ....No machine can be 100% efficient but it is possible to design machines which draw energy form the fabric of space giving the appearance of greater than 100% efficiency. Teslar [sic] did a lot of experiments on this but his notes were either destroyed or Hidden (I personally think he destroyed them because he stubbled upon something too dangerous to be experimented on at the time). Hardline physicist don't want to discover this because it means they have to re-theorise everything." Not wishing to embarrass this osteopath more than he embarrasses himself, I will not mention his name, but readers can contact me for the source of the quote. Should the UK and NZ governments require all osteopaths to take at least a minimum of High School science subjects?

"modern, rigorous". well, thank you. i suppose chiropractors should take that as a complement since they take the same basic anatomical sciences.( by the way, chiro students were told by the national board examiners they kicked the med students asses.) actually though, it's all pretty irrelevant. the point being, none of that gets sick people well. if it did, the medics would, but they don't.
2 :
Yes. Since I'm unfamiliar with osteopathy, will you give links as proof of your claims?
3 :
I'm sure that all the RELEVANT basic "science" is taken into consideration, including "high school science" whatever that is. People who go to Osteopaths are going for a particular treatment modality. They understand what the specialty is and that's what they want, or they wouldn't go there. If you don't agree with what's being practised and how, then you're not likely to be a patient.
4 :
They should at least know A level (or higher) biology... but then if someone IS good at something and has got that way through on-the-job training, and has a good reputation (regardless of any previous education) then I would say they were an anomaly in the trade. I would be wary of anyone who claims things that make you doubt their professionalism. I sometimes hear stories from people who have been trained in the field I work in (arboriculture), and I can tell they are lying right away, which then gives me cause for concern, and to maybe not trust their abilities as a person as much. As for the Tesla thing, I know his wind turbine has been made, owing to the advances in modern technology... but yes... nothing is 100% efficient.
5 :
You do not appear to have done adequate research on university requirements. Your first statement is incorrect. Not all of those subjects are prerequisites for studying a bachelor of medicine in all tertiary institutions. Chemistry is usually a prerequisite. As is Maths. Biology is often omitted. And Physics is sometimes an adequate substitution for Chemistry. Two examples: http://www.qtac.edu.au/Courses/courses/guide2011/317012.htm http://www.qtac.edu.au/Courses/courses/guide2011/020712.htm As for your claim of "rigorous courses", Harvard Medical School only requires 2 years for Chemistry and all other subjects only 1 year. http://hms.harvard.edu/admissions/default.asp?page=requirements I studied senior (2 years) high school Maths (Standard and Advanced), Biology, Chemistry and Physics. They are foundation level courses. As a general guideline, many non-prerequisite high school subjects are covered at University level over a 4-6 week period, meaning 4-6 hours of lectures. That is why many medical courses do not have your stated requirements. What this means in reality is that those who have not studied the subject at high school may need to work harder to understand and pass examinations in these subjects. For example: - Dental Science requires Maths, and one of Biology/Chemistry/Physics http://www.qtac.edu.au/Courses/courses/guide2011/712002.htm - Pharmacy requires Maths and Chemistry http://www.qtac.edu.au/Courses/courses/guide2011/725002.htm - Veterinary Science requires Maths and Chemistry http://www.qtac.edu.au/Courses/courses/guide2011/317051.htm This is the outline for a course in Osteopathy in Australia - 5 years, which is the same period required of dentists. MDs have 6 years of full-time study. http://www.qtac.edu.au/Courses/courses/guide2011/055111.htm It appears you are either ignoring facts to enhance an attack, or you really know very little about university education, particularly in relation to medical sciences.

Since we don't know what you want to study -- business, perhaps, given your mention of the GMAT? -- we really can't help you. You need to contact individual schools to ask about their requirements. As the site below indicates, British universities are not usually interested in the GRE. Some management programs may want to see GMAT results, but you'll have to ask once you've identified possible universities.

I just graduated with a bachelor's degree in history and a teaching certificate here in the U.S. (I'm American.) Is there any way I could go about interning or student teaching (I've already student-taught in the U.S.) in the U.K.? Thanks!

I've honestly no idea. Certainly there are no legal requirements for qualifications to teach in independent schools in the UK, so you would be eligible to apply for standard teaching posts. However, if you are looking for some sort of supported work, then you may be well-advised to contact the Independent Schools Council to ask for their advice, and to see if they have any suitable contacts for you.

UK school years in U.S terms

UK school years in U.S terms?
I just wanted to know the education structure in the U.S., since I often read about it in books and such and am completely confused, because I don't understand it. Here is the UK system Nursery/Reception 3-4. Basically daycare school before education starts. Learn numbers, alphabet etc. Infant School 5-6 . Nursery but alot more focused on education. Uniform introduced etc Junior School 6-10 - Further Education. More difference between subjects. Secondary School/Sixth Form 11-17 - Smart uniform (blazer, tie, shirt). Core subjects(English, Science, Maths) given more attenttion than foundation subjects (Philosophy and Belief, Geography etc). After Sixth form, you go towards College or University. So what it's like for Americans?

One big difference between the US and UK is that in the US, school is managed by the state rather than national government. There may be variation in school curriculum etc. But, basically, this is how it works: Kindergarten - ages 5-6. Some K's are half-day, others are full-day. In the past, this year was an introduction to school with lots of gentle, hands-on activities, but in the past decade or more K has become more academic with most children reading by the end. 1st grade through 5th grade for ages 6-11 year olds. Grades K-5 are collectively referred to as "elementary school". (In some school districts, Grade 6 is also included in Elementary school.) In Elementary school, students focus on acquiring basic skills in reading, writing, and math as well as learning information in science and social studies (mostly history, geography,) Many schools offer "extra curricular" subjects such as music, art, physical education, and less commonly, foreign language. Students attend one classroom for most of the day, with the academic subjects being taught all by the same teacher. Kids may visit another teacher for special classes. All of the grades after Elementary school are referred to collectively as "secondary school" For the next grades there are two system. In the older system, kids move into "Junior High School" for grades 7,8,9. (ages 12-14 years old) In the newer system, kids have "Middle School" comprised of grades 6,7,8. (ages 11-13 years old). Whichever system you attend, you will begin moving from classroom to classroom with different teachers for each subject. Most kids in these grades have some limited choices of extra classes (for example, choir, band, art, home economics, etc.) but all students must attend the 4 core clases of English, math, social studies, and science. 6-7 classes per day is pretty typical. Next, students go to High school for grades 9-12 or 10-12 (depending on which system your school district uses for middle grades.) Each grade in High school has a special name: 9th grade (ages 14-15) Freshman 10th grade (15-16) Sophomore 11th grade (16-17) Junior 12th grade (17-18) Senior Most students take 6-8 classes each day in HS. There are requirements about how many classes a student must take in each subject area, and beyond this the student is free to choose classes s/he is interested in. Most high schools offer 'regular' and 'honors' classes in each subject area, and students are free to either challenge themselves (and prepare for university) or take the regular, more basic classes. ALL students are expected to complete grade 12 and to "graduate" from high school. It is legal to "drop out" of school at age 16, but students who do this are more or less doomed to a life of poverty (and only a small percentage of kids drop out). The expectation is definately that every kid will continue in school until age 18 and get a high school diploma. Hope that helps!
