In the past students took an exam at 12 and if they passed they went to the grammar school to do more difficult courses history, geography, Latin,maths. This would lead to O and A levels. If they failed they went to the secondary modern where they generally did practical courses and did CSE exams, The system continues in a few places like Buckinghamshire but students all do GCSE's now. In most places this system was scrapped and replaced by schools who taught everything to everyone (a comprehensive education). All of the above are government run Private schools don't exist. I think you mean Public schools are ones which people pay for their children to attend such as Eton, Harrow
